Purrfect! I've recently discovered Pet Life Radio, which offers a slightly mind-boggling array of audio files in various categories on pet-related topics that you can stream from the site, download via iTunes, or download directly to your computer and listen to on the device of your choice. The audio quality can vary, and there are rather a lot of ads, but I find these ideal for listening while slogging through mundane chores or during long commutes. A few that I've enjoyed lately have included a great, casual, wide-ranging discussion on Kids Owning Dogs (which brought up a lot of very interesting points about children and dogs in general); Homer's Odyssey - A 'Tail' For Modern Times, about the true-life adventures of a blind rescue cat; an interview with little Courtney Oliver, The Youngest Vet Assistant in the Land, and the Evolution of the Housecat, a podcast that also included tips for helping to protect your pets in case of a house fire. <div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs><div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs><div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs><div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs><div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs><div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs><div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs>

It can seem amusing to us, but if you see your dog doing the "the scoot" regularly, take note! It might mean he or she has has an anal gland problem. "Dogs with impacted anal glands will lick and bite at their bottoms, they will scoot along the floor, they will occasionally emit a fishy odor and can also seem sad, irritated or generally upset." If it only happens once in a while, the problem may just be some feces that didn't quite get expelled, or a general itch, or possibly a temporary problem with constipation -- but if you see a pattern, it could be a symptom of impacted anal glands, worms, or other medical issues, so If you see a regular habit of butt scooting, best to have the doc check it out!

If your scooter does have a problem with his or her anal glands, your vet can express them during regular visits and checkups, or you can learn to do it yourself (not for the fainthearted!). Smaller dogs seem more prone to this particular problem, but for many dogs the issue can often be helped with a better diet, because a more solid "poop" can help the glands express naturally.

All about scooting, for cats and dogs.

Make sure the tag information is up to date, legible and securely attached, and that the collar is in good condition. I'm ordering a new tag with the regular information: our dog's name (though some prefer not to include this), our phone, and our address (again, not everyone wants this). And, after seeing this elsewhere, I'm also going to get a second tag that says, "If I'm Alone, I'm Lost!". After spotting so many dogs that could be backyard escapees, but who are maybe just owner-sanctioned free roamers, I find it frustrating to wonder if I should try to find an owner, or just mind my own business, and I want anyone who finds our girl to know they should call us! Another great idea is a tag that says "If injured, please treat; we will pay!" with our Vet's number. I think I'll include this on the other side of the "Lost" tag.

Update all your pet-related care, emergency and poison control numbers at home, and make sure you have them at your fingertips on your cell phone.

Organize all your dog's care, health and licensing information in a drawer or box: Vet care booklet/history, any instructions for meds, x-rays, calendar of checkups/vaccinations, anything that you might need that is related to your dog. For example, when I put my dog's Scalibor collar on, I mark the date on the discarded package and toss into the drawer so I can check it when I think it's getting to be time for a new one.

Create a doggy emergency kit in the event of a natural disaster! This is such a good idea, and trainer Cissy Sumner has some great advice for a pet preparedness pack for Floridians.

Finally, think about donating today to the SPCA or another shelter or rescue group, or consider fostering if you have the time and inclination... And, of course, don't forget to tell your dog, "I love you!

<div_prefs id="div_prefs"></div_prefs>

It's obvious that the strong, spiny papillae on the top work as an effective grooming aid, but you may not know that they also help kitty manipulate his food and carry it to his mouth, trap liquid on the tongue while drinking, and even play a part in subduing struggling prey, as well as cleaning flesh from bone. These wee hooked barbs are actually made of keratin, just like our fingernails, and make their usefulness known immediately, as they also help kittens to suckle!

Here's a wonderful slow-motion video that shows a cat using her clever tongue to create a little "dipper" for drinking:

Likewise, many cats tend to view too-enthusiastic overtures with disapproval, and may even tend to gravitate toward the person paying them the least attention -- even if he or she is not much of a cat fancier. :) But is there an accepted way of saying "howdy-do" to strangers of the feline persuasion? According to the International Association of Animal Behavioral Consultants, there certainly is, and the answer is at your fingertips. "Sit down and extend your index finger towards the cat at about
cat-nose level. The initial greeting distance depends on the individual
cat and her circumstances. You might be only a foot away from the cat or
across a room from the cat. If you know the cat, and the cat is
comfortable with you, the distance can be decreased. It's now up to the cat to make the first move. When she's ready to
say "hello" she will walk up to your extended finger and touch it with
her nose. Next she will move her head so that your finger is on her
mouth and then she'll move her head so that your finger is on her cheek.
If she wants to continue with the meeting, she will rub your finger and
your hand with her cheek, marking you."

Of course, our own cats, or cats we know well, have their own ways of extending greetings, including the ever adorable "head bump." How does your cat say hello?

But let us hope that no invaders were fluent in dog language, because to me, this Pompeiian pup is clearly in play bow pose. He wants to frolic! "The classic play bow is the dog's invitation to play. The dog's tail and butt is in the air, and the front legs are lowered. The dog's ears are up and forward, his mouth is open in a "grin", and his eyes are relaxed." Barring rolling over and exposing the belly, there's no clearer signal that a dog is a non-threatening mode than the play bow... and unlike the submissive pose, it proposes mutually enjoyable social interaction and fun times. So strong is this body language that at least one trainer has hit upon the idea to actually train the play bow specifically as a way to ease socialization with new dogs or places, which is quite interesting. Here's a video of an owner teaching her toy Manchester Terrier to perform a play bow with clicker training:

How do we say "Beware! Playful doggies on premises!" in Latin?

Of course, showing teeth is generally considered threatening, but I know part of my dog's teeth do show when she "smiles," which she does when she initiates play -- similar to the dog in the photo above right.

of the products, he was happier (and hungrier) in every single
alternative product than he was when wearing the classic
veterinary-supplied cone. His legendary appetite quickly returned, as
did his spunk and spark (and bark!)." Similar options are available for kitty, too, but remember that for all pets, fit is important, since you don't want them squirming out of the collar! (Additionally, the type or location of the wound may dictate that one style will work better than another, and in all cases, it's probably best to allow your recovering pet outside only under supervision as any of these collars may impair agility, become caught on bushes or fences, or present other unforeseen difficulties.)

These kinder alternatives are certainly pricier than the plastic cone, with price tags ranging from $8 to $49, but might actually pay for themselves many times over with speedier healing times for happier convalescents -- not to mention sparing our own eyes the pathetic sight of our unhappy furballs desperately lurching around and pathetically pawing at their "torture collars." We can't all be brilliant pet portraitists with years of experience and professional equipment, but most of us would love to capture a few great photos of our beloved beasties. Here are a couple of down-to-earth, useful guides to help you shoot your pet: 9 Pet Photography Tips; How to Photograph Pets. My own best advice in a nutshell is: be relaxed, try out new positions and settings, keep the light behind or to the side of you, and shoot a lot. At some point serendipity meets patience, and magic can happen!

(If you're hungry for more Tim Flach-flavored inspiration, look for his photo book, "Dogs," coming out in October.)

See how his delicate ears and pink nose have almost no melanin pigmentation to protect them from burning UV rays? White and light cats are particularly prone to skin cancer, especially on their tender ears, noses and eyelids. There has been some conversation about this very topic in Flickr's White Cats photo pool, here and here. (Some sad stories, but quite eye-opening about how gravely serious this problem can be.)

While some advise using a high SPF sunblock on your white/light cat's sensitive spots, it's important to remember that cats clean themselves all the time, so yes, such precaution might last a short while as you let your wee snowball bask a bit in the sun under your watchful eye -- but the only reliable preventative measure is to keep your white cat out of direct sunlight from 10 AM to 2-3 PM. If you do use a sunscreen, be sure to choose something that blocks UVA and UVB rays and is specifically nontoxic for pets.

eHow: How to Detect Skin Cancer in Cats; All about: White Cats, Eye Colours and Deafness; Flickr: White Cats Pool.
