It's Earth Day 2010! What better way to celebrate Mother Earth than by making a commitment to reduce your pet's carbon footprint? Here are 5 Green Pet Tips to get you started...

Adopt a shelter pet. The sad puppy mill stories continue to grow, and there's just no better way to go green. Our favorite saying here at Groovy is, "Recycle. Adopt a dog." And you can buy an organic t-shirt with that saying for yourself or your doggie at our store, thanks to our friends at Read My Paws. There are so many wonderful pets that need a loving home. Find pets available for adoption in your local area at www.petfinder.com - Spay or neuter your pet. No excuses - get it done! This is the best way to cut down on pet overpopulation and to reduce the number of pets that are euthanized. It costs much more for a community to euthanize unwanted pets than it does to spay or neuter. Think you can't afford it? Check your local resources to see if your community offers low cost options. The ASPCA offers a database of free and low-cost spay-neuter clinics searchable by zip code. Want to go an extra step towards going green? Offer to spay or neuter a friend or neighbor's pet who may not be able to afford it.
- Switch to a holistic diet. Getting your furry friends on an all natural diet will improve their health, translates to less trips to the veterinarian, and believe it or not, reduces the amount of poop you have to clean up!
- Green the poop! Use ONLY biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags. Have a lawn? Check out a doggie waste disposal system that keeps poop off your lawn and out of landfills. Cat parents find a natural, eco-friendly cat litter for your feline friend.
- Use natural cleaners and grooming supplies. When Scruffy leaves his mark, use vinegar instead of harsh chemicals. Check out other cleaning tips for pets using vinegar. Buy and use ONLY all natural grooming products that are better for the environment and safe for your and your pets.
